Wyoming in title hunt entering final round of NHSFR

GILLETTE -- Wyoming could have at least eight contestants in today's championship round of the 56th National High School Finals Rodeo.

Through Saturday morning's 11th performance at the Cam-Plex, eight contestants from the Cowboy State were among the top 20 in their respective events.

The second go-round wrapped up late Saturday night. Results weren't available in time to meet the Casper Star-Tribune's deadline.

The top 20 contestants in each event, based on the aggregate times or scores of two ropes or rides this week, will compete in today's short go. The finals kick off at 1 p.m.

Wyoming particularly shined in girls cutting, where Wheatland's Kacy Hatten and Daniel's Andrea James held the second and fourth positions, respectively, in the aggregate standings. Hatten had 441.5 points, James 438.5. Tesstina Matthews of Wickenburg, Ariz., fronted the girls cutting standings entering Saturday night with 442.5 points.

Big Piney's Thomas Baker was third in the bareback riding aggregate with 140 points.

Gillette's Sydney Hettinger was seventh in barrel racing with a run of 33.462 seconds.

Powell's Kanin Asay was 13th in bull riding with one qualified ride for 84 points. He was bucked off Thursday in the second round. Jared Green of Socorro, N.M., was leading the bull riding two-head aggregate with 164 points.

Tie-down ropers Taylor Hepp of Gillette and Jason Hubbard of Wheatland were crossing their fingers Saturday night, hoping their 15th- and 18th-place standings held up through Saturday night's competition.

Nine Wyomingites competing in eight events, including team roping, on Saturday night had opportunities to crack into the top 20.

Pinedale saddle bronc rider Clayton Selby had the best opportunity to qualify for the finals. He tied for sixth in the first round with 68 points. Steve Woolsey of Benjamin, Utah, led the aggregate standings in bronc riding through Saturday morning with 143 points.

Entering Saturday night, Wyoming was third in the projected state standings with 3,512 points. Texas fronted the field with 5,357 followed by Utah with 4,437.

Wyoming was third in the projected girls' team standings with 1,725 points. The Lone Star State was in front with 2,342.5 followed by Utah with 1,895.

Texas also paced the projected boys' team standings with 3,015 points. New Mexico was second with 2,640 and Wyoming ninth with 1,787.5.

Big Piney's Baker was tied for sixth in the second go-round of bareback riding after recording 69 points Saturday morning.

Gillette's Hettinger was fourth in the second round of barrel racing with a time of 16.586 seconds.

Wheatland's Hatten and Daniel's James were fifth and sixth, respectively, in girls cutting with 220.5 and 219.5 points.

Shoshoni's Corey Turner stood sixth in the second go of bulldogging with 5.843 seconds.

Chance Nicholls of Kinnear and Chance Hampton of Riverton held the No. 12 spot in team roping with a 8.197 clocking.
