NHSFR: Ten Wyomingites place among top eight in first go

GILLETTE -- Wyoming recorded 10 top-eight finishes in the first go-round of the National High School Finals Rodeo and moved into third place in the projected state standings, trailing only Texas and Utah.

The first go began Monday morning and wrapped up late Wednesday night with the sixth performance of the week at the Cam-Plex. The second go kicked off Thursday morning. It will conclude Saturday night.

Results of Thursday night's eighth performance weren't available in time to meet the Casper Star-Tribune's deadline.

The top 20 contestants in each event, based on the aggregate scores or times from two ropes or rides, qualify for Sunday's championship round.

Texas led the state standings with 4,145 points followed by Utah with 3,035 and Wyoming 3,025.

Wyoming was second in the boys' team standings with 2,325 points. The Lone Star state led with 2,680.

Pinedale's Cody Wright was the top Cowboy State finisher in the first go, tying for third in saddle bronc riding with Tyler Moody of Ridge Spring, S.C. Each had 73 points.

Pinedale's Clayton Selby, who took the early lead in bronc riding on Monday, wound up tied for sixth with 68 points. He will make his second attempt on Saturday.

Arvada's Kortney Fisher was fourth in barrel racing with a run of 16.442 seconds.

Lander's Katie Felix took fourth in breakaway roping, looping her calf in 3.162 seconds.

Wheatland's Kacy Hatten tied for fourth in girls cutting with 221 points.

Wright's John Franzen, an early leader in steer wrestling, wound up fourth in the first round with a time of 4.595 seconds.

Powell's Kanin Asay finished fifth in bull riding with a score of 84 points on Wednesday night.

Wheatland's Jason Hubbard was fifth in tie-down roping with a run of 10.143 seconds, followed by Parkman's Brett Heggie in eighth with a 10.839.

Big Piney's Thomas Baker tied for seventh in bareback riding with 71 points.

Meanwhile, Chance Nicholls of Kinnear and Chance Hampton of Riverton stood second in the early second go-round rankings with a time of 8.197 seconds on Thursday morning.

Douglas' Charles Delyea was 10th in the boys cutting second go with 199 points.
